*UPDATE: CONGRATULATIONS to Erin and Marianne, the winners of the “WHAT DOES A TINY hOMe MEAN TO ME” #tinyU hOMe plans giveaway! We are so happy they have won!*

What? What’s that you say? A giveaway?? If you are anything like me, the idea of winning something really special is enough to make you swoon. Here’s the scoop. We are curious about what tiny house living means to YOU. I mean, of course we have our own thoughts about it, but we want to hear your ideas!

We invite you to think about this question: WHAT DOES A TINY HOME MEAN TO YOU? Then just tag your thoughts with the hashtag #tinyU. Our answer for example would be “A tiny home means we can spend more time as a family #tinyU”. What is yours? To enter for a chance to win a free set of hOMe “Total Package” hOMe Plans, please shout out your answers on Facebook, Twitter, or G+. One submission per account, per social network please.

We will select a winner at random on April 21st at 3pm Pacific. Truly there’s no right or wrong answer because we will be selecting the winner at random. Feel free to let your imagination go and get creative. Use hashtag #tinyU over Facebook, Twitter, or Google Plus before 3pm Pacific on Monday. At the close of the submission time we will choose the winner and announce it to everyone. We will gather the responses together into a post, so you can see what motivates your tiny peers.

The winner will receive a free “TOTAL PLANS PACKAGE” of hOMe, which will include the printed plans, the PDF version of the plans via instant download, the SketchUp file, materials list, as well as the bonuses (a $299 value). Hey, if you want we’ll even have Oscar (the best tiny house dog EVER) autograph it for you! 🙂 We truly look forward to seeing what you come up with and to learn what a tiny home means to you!

Stay tiny my friends,

Gabriella and Andrew

a tiny home to me means a resource with which to start my own homestead in the hopes of becoming self sufficient within our great country.

It is a safe haven for my new wife and i, and a fresh start in life.

Really want to enter this for a chance to win these plans but have no idea how to submit an entry. I know I must sound pretty stupid but I don’t use # for anything-never have. So can you explain in steps what I need to do? This is what happens when you reach you senior years and can’t keep up on technology .

    • Gabriella April 18, 2014 at 5:22 pm #

Lynne, trust me I had to have a hashtag 101 crash course this week having never done that whole # thing! And I STILL barely understand it! To keep it simple, all you need to do is come up with your answer and write #tinyU after it. For example, if you wanted to say “Tiny home living means that I can have more time for my family #tinyU”. Hope that helps! 🙂

#tinyUtiny Home Living Will and does mean living the simple life. Playing again like when I was a kid, playing with my kids and wonderful husband and not having all the DISTRACTIONS Of “stuff”! I don’t have a tiny home yet! But one day and very soon we will have our dream tiny home sweet home. Thanks

What does a tiny home mean to me? I’m divorced and 60 years old (no children), and a tiny home will mean a mortgage-free home that is beautiful, functional, has a tiny environmental footprint, and will allow me and my two small dogs (Maltese) to have our own home in a lovely rural location (either Albemarle or Nelson County, Virginia). I will be able to retire when the time comes (probably at 70) and be able to have a decent standard of living, a good quality of life, do volunteer work and be useful to my community. Life doesn’t get any better than that!

A tiny house will help me maintain my independents as long as possible. It is the perfect size for myself and my service dog, Kodi. I’m already practicing the lifestyle in a camper.

We are tring to build a whole Tiny house community in our city.To us it would mean jobs and a safe affordable housing for a group of people who are struggling. #tinyU

I have been dreaming about a tiny home for years. It is my best hope for ever having a home of my very own. For now, I dream…and continue to pare down belongings. #tinyU

A tiny home means financial freedom + more time with my husband and animals + more time to learn self-reliance + build a homestead = happy life! #tinyU

#tinyU, it means I finally get to move my babies and husband to live on our property on the ocean to live and learn to live before they are to old to appreciate it. #tinuU

  12. Marianne April 20, 2014 at 2:13 pm #

We serve in the Canadian military (as a pilot and mental healthcare provider). We move often, and seldom do we get to go to the same place. We have been looking for an off the grid affordable solution for our lifestyle. A tiny hOMe means we get the best of both worlds: living in comfort while respecting the land. A tiny hOMe would also mean that we can finally stop the waste of maintaining two homes and be united. Simplicity, elegance and respect for our surroundings. #tinyU

What does a tiny home mean to me?? A tiny home means financial stability. It is affordable and will cost much less than a huge home. To me, a tiny home means simplicity. The ability to lead a fulfilling life having only the things that are necessary (food, water, shelter,) without taking a plunge financially. A tiny home means being able to discover that which I have yet to discover, but want to. To go out and be a part of the beauty of nature and to really experience it. To see the world, live off the grid, and travel…. And lastly, a tiny home means being able to spend it with the individuals who matter most to me….my family. #TinyU

That sofa, on the second floor of your house next to the ladder, looks dangerous. Shouldn’t you put in a railing so that you can’t inadvertently step off the sofa and fall off onto the floor beneath ?

    • Gabriella April 21, 2014 at 4:14 pm #

Thanks for writing Lee! We put a rail there in our own hOMe and the plans specify rails there as well. 🙂

A tiny house would enable my husband and I to downsize in preparation for retirement. It would also allow us to choose a more serene, uplifting and safe location in which to live. We would feel good about doing something that is environmentally sound that also sets a good example of positive future housing options. #tinyU

I have spent my entire adult life trying to follow in the footsteps of my parents and “Live the American Dream”! The only problem was that my husband of 37 years and I always lived outside of our means and incurred a large amount of debt instead of saving for out future needs. For the last 8 years or so, we have gotten serious about simplifying our lives, downsizing and paying off all of our debt. My husband is 67 and I will be 60 this year. We own our own small ( really small) business for the last 36 years while raising 4 wonderful children. Now that my husband who lost a hip when he was three and has stood on his feet cutting hair as the local small town barber for the last 47 years works fewer hours and we are almost completely out of debt except for our mortgage, we would love to sell our 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch style home that has dropped in value over $100,000.00 in the last 6 years and build a “Tiny House” near my son’s Farm 30 miles away in SE Arizona. I have been selling assets, having yard sales and giving things away in preparation for downsizing and really got interested in “Tiny” houses in 2006 through my oldest son who is a minimalist. To be able to focus on each other and our 11 grandchildren, to be able to direct our funds towards building relationships instead of acquiring things and to live in a compact, energy efficient home during time we have left together would be a dream come true!

My own Tiny House would be an ideal home for me (and my cats, of course!). It would mean a much smaller impact on the environment, and a very reduced use of resources. It seems to me that it would lend itself very well to “living off the grid”!The size would satisfy my desire to have a small personal living space that would closely match my very limited need for “stuff”. It would be awesome to be able to hitch it to a truck and move. No need to sell a house, then buy a new one. Just buy a new suitable plot of land, and move my home there. I could even keep possession of the old plot, and move back there any time I wanted to.

#tinyU This would mean that I could finally begin living my dream. A home with no mortgage. I have the skills to build it I just need the plans. I just finished my degree in Sustainable Technologies and I’m ready to put it all to good use. This would help me start my life over. My girlfriend and I could see the country.

  19. Jeff May 12, 2014 at 6:14 pm #

Wow. I tiny home would be a terrific solution for me and my Dog. I am nearing foreclosure and just need a small space to call home. I am in disability process.
    God Bless

I have always dreamed of and have always been trying to figure out how to own a sustainable home. A tiny home would be a perfect platform and quite doable to be self-sufficient, at least of the grid. Your house is a case and point. Now you really have me dreaming. #tinyU
