What Are You Passionate About?

What Are You Passionate About?

Andrew and I were speaking about our business and we both realized just how fortunate we are. There are a number of reasons that we consider ourselves lucky but one big one came to the forefront during our conversation. It is that we love what we do. The more we spoke, the clearer it became that the reason we love what we do is that we are passionate about it. We truly believe in what we are doing and that makes our “work” not really work.

In this realization, I had the thought about other people in the world. How many of them are living their passion and how many are simply living to survive? So many people have gotten stuck in the machine of our culture, so stuck that they don’t even notice it anymore. They go to work each day at a job they don’t like so they can make enough money to pay for all their stuff (flat screen TVs in each room, multiple cars, a closet full of shoes, and so on). Beyond their stuff, a huge portion of their paycheck goes to pay a mortgage or rent on a house that’s bigger than they actually need. Wal-Mart and other corporations would have them believe that they are living the American Dream, but if they stop long enough to take a look from “outside their life” they may tell you otherwise. A friend of mine once asked me “are you thriving or surviving?” and that’s exactly the question I have for you.

How many of us can actually say that we love our work? How many are excited to show up at their job and know that their presence there is supporting a bigger picture view of what they want to accomplish in life? As Gandhi encouraged us to “be the change we wish to see in the world,” I wonder how many are actually heeding that call. Ask yourself if you are one of the few. If you are not, what’s stopping you?

I have heard from many people over the years (myself included) that the fear of not having enough (money, food, shelter, etc) can be crippling. The thinking sounds something like this: “I don’t like my job, but at least I can afford to buy food and have a nice house. Some day, I’ll do the things I truly want to do, but for now, I can’t risk losing my job.” It’s seemingly sound thinking, after all, who would want to risk losing their job; especially in the current sagging economy? But there is pervasive sadness in the words “some day.” It’s sad to me because so many people never reach that “some day.” The fear of loss is ALWAYS too big for them and so they stay trapped in their jobs, surviving, and wishing their life looked different somehow.

Taking a risk and stepping out into the world of thriving is scary, no doubt; however, when you find your passion and you fully connect to what you want to accomplish in life, everything will line up and you will find support from places you may not have known even existed. You may call it God, the Universe, Spirit, or any other name. It is the undeniable certainty that when you are aligned with your inner truth, obstacles will fall away and you will thrive. I have seen this happen over and over again in my own life and in the lives of my friends and family. To me, it’s simply true. Unfortunately, the machine of our society has got such a strong grip on so many people that many don’t have a clue what their passion even is. They may hope to find it (if they are awake enough to notice they are missing it), but with so much “noise” in the world, that can be hard to do.

A great way to start is to get grounded and quiet. The most obvious distraction that many people live with and actually seem to like having around is the TV. I know I tend to harp on TV a bit, but that’s because I truly see it as a poisonous part of our society meant to do one thing: encourage us to spend more money on stuff we don’t need. If you watch TV, like most Americans do, you probably have it on at least 5 hours a day, most likely in the evenings.  Just think of all the peaceful and productive time one could have, every day, if they didn’t drown out their passion and inner quiet with TV.

Here’s a simple (it may not seem it at first) way to start getting quiet: unplug your TV and don’t turn it back on for at least one month. Completely disconnect yourself from it. If you go to a bar or restaurant that has a TV on, sit so that you are not facing it. Do whatever you can to completely separate yourself from the culture of television for the month. In the time that you used to spend watching TV, do something “real.” That could be playing board games or cards with your family, learning to speak a new language, reading books, sitting quietly and simply being. The point is to get your feet back on the ground and to connect with “real life: yours.

With your feet on the ground and your inner landscape afforded a bit more space and quiet, see what comes up for you. Ask yourself, each day, what your passion is and what change you would like to see in the world. Draw a picture of what the perfect world would look like in your mind. Write down what it is that makes it so wonderful. Ask yourself what you can do to make this picture and story become a reality. Over time, or perhaps suddenly, you will find yourself awakening to your passion.

I believe there is more to truly landing in your passion than simply turning off your TV, but this is a starting point, a place to get your toes into the water. If you want to continue to journey, which I hope you do, I suggest taking a two-week vision quest (whatever that means to you) once you have found your initial calm. Perhaps sitting in the woods alone for two weeks with nothing but food, shelter and a place to write down your thoughts would be a good idea.  Perhaps taking an official vision quest with a respected leader while holding a specific intention is your path. There are many ways to continue this journey and to find your passion. Which one is right for you will become clear, once you get quiet.

What I want most for you right now is to simply inspire you to ask yourself if you are thriving or surviving. I hope that many of you will answer “thriving,” but I also know that even the most amazing people in my life have been stuck in the survival mode before. There’s no shame in it. It simply is what it is. If you are not where you want to be, ask yourself what’s in the way of you getting there. Once you start asking these questions, take time to really listen for the answers. When you find the answers, act on them. It may not be any easy journey and it will likely have its discomforts for you along the way, but the journey itself and the landing place you discover are both very much worth the effort.

Andrew-more people should actually follow that advice-and pass it on to their children. Think what the result would be for our world!

    • Andrew February 4, 2014 at 8:51 am #

I agree Kris. It’s what we believe in and we try to inspire in our kids.

Hello Andrew I have watched your videos and they have hit the nail on the head for me. I’ve been living the “RV Dream” for the past 3 years and so I have downsized my life. I am ready for the next step, which in my mind is to build my own tiny house. I am trying to figure out how to afford that. The “thriving not just surviving” part is the difficult one. I appreciate everything you’ve said, but any other words of advice?

    • Andrew February 5, 2014 at 7:36 am #

Hi Vicki. I think my advice would be to follow your heart and believe that you will find the way, whether it be financially or emotionally or whatever is currently blocking you, to achieve your dreams. Stay inspired. Leep dreaming. Take daily steps towards the goal. Have you heard of SMART goals?

      Time Bound

This is a great way to set small goals for yourself that you can do every day. The momentum will start to snowball and things will happen…

Finally, remember to ENJOY the journey!

It makes my heart almost leap out of my chest to hear such inspiringly beautiful achievements. I have recently been reunited with my high school sweetheart and we have begun the steps to a life built on faith and love. I started a home based business NYR Organic and we are putting in motion the beginning of life OUT OF THE RAT RACE!! It is what I call my time in the Big Sleep. I think most of us have lived a life half awake grasping a things that truly just dont matter. Thank you for your wonderful gift to all of us …. A way to begin living!

Congratulations! So glad to hear of your vision coming into reality and that you are awake!!! What a great place to be: awake.

I have been following the tiny house movement, mainly just looking at various tiny homes, the interiors, etc. simply bc after 24 years of marriage and now recently separated and financially stuck, I believe a tiny home to be the only kind I will ever be able to afford. However, what has happened to me is quite wonderful. I am beginning to grasp the minimalist attitude and feel a comfort and sort of peace within myself and now, after reading this last post, I have a strong desire to seek what will allow me to thrive rather than simply survive.

        Thank you,

Hi Lynn, I just wanted to tell you that I am exactly the same place as you are after almost 25 yrs of marriage….I too am looking into tiny houses and living debt free as soon as possible….I am excited about this new journey and would love to hear from you. I live in Texas so have lots of options for tiny houses. Hope you are making progress on yours. My email: [email protected] Best wishes in your venture, Trish

            Hi Lynn and Trish,

Like you guys, after 21 years of marriage my husband is divorcing me leaving me without a car and home. He did bankruptcy in order for me not have anything. We 4 kids but the last one, my girl is the only child in the house. But I’m fighting to keep half on everything he make and retirement, mbut I realized that the only sure income his military retirement and I need to be prepare for whenever he changes his mind. And that is why after I had looked the video in Netflix call “Tiny Houses” came with the conclusion that is going to be my plan b. I come from the country of Panama and houses out there are very small, and I grow up on a 500 square feet with my parents and my 2 brothers and when I got married my house was less than that so I know how to live small but coming to live in this country, you tent to loose that sense in time. My house right now is 4 bedroom with 2100 sf on 2 acres with a double garage. We accumulate through the years so much stuff that we don’t even look at it and we provably had forgot that we got them, so me and my daughter been reflecting on those things and how wonderful will be if we have our tiny house, growing our own food ( because we do ) raising chickens, and working from home. Andrew is mentioned here that you do what you are passioned about so I’m a baker and I homeschool my daughter and she is planing to become a beautician one day. But his is the pattern that me and my daughter are choosing, living deb, morgage Free. Getting out of the rat race in our own terms. Lynn and Trish I will like to contact with you guys to see how you guys are doing with living tiny. My email address is [email protected] gmail.com but looks to me that Texas have no problem in people living in tiny homes, I live in Ce

Hi Andrew, it’s a pleasure to read your “what are you passionate about?”page, I’ve been studying 3d industrial design for the last two year and its been great but pretty stressful. I’m turning 6o this year and just want to chill out and find a new begining for myself. I want to live simply, travel and find intuitive ways to make this world a better place. Thanks for your post, I’m keeping the tv off! Keep up with the posts, your doing a wonderful job!

Thanks Fiona. I appreciate your kind feedback and sharing. Best of success to you in finding that calm you speak of.

    Hi Guys,
I just stumbled upon you on YouTube. I found myself transfixed by your home tour! I am in love with your tiny home. I have a couple of questions.
*you mentioned! I believe! that you are a family of four(during the forks and spoons reveal). Assuming you have 2kids, where do they sleep?
*I think I saw solar panels outside your window. Is that correct? If so, do the panels provide all your power?
*I read the article about loving your job. Forgive me if I am too personal, but what do you do for a living?
Again, I really love your home. I admire you for living your dreams.
I look forward to hearing from you

    • Andrew March 28, 2014 at 5:34 pm #

Thanks for your message. We do indeed have two kids (17 and 14). Right now, our 17 year old is a boarding student at a college prep school so is only home during the summer and breaks. When he is home, he stays in the house with us in the tiny lounge loft. Our daughter lives with us full time and she has a 120SF cabin of her own. It is designed for sleeping and has a large desk for her art and school work. She is home schooled, so she needs lots of room for that. I am currently building a treehouse that will be our son’s sleeping area and “home base” when he comes home. As much as we LOVE having both our kids in our tiny house, they need a space to find privacy and to have their friends come and stay. There would not be room for sleepovers in hOMe.

We are totally off grid (except for our heating propane) so, yes, our power is provided by solar.

As far as what I do for a living, I teach people how to build straw bale houses. I teach 7-day, hands-on workshops all over the world. I also aim to inspire people to live their passions and realize their dreams through personal coaching and workshops.

      Thanks for connecting.

Wonderful post, this is exactly what I am working toward in my life through selling photography online. Also I absolutely love your house photos, your plan is so much more practical and well-thought out (not to mention comfortable!) than many I’ve seen. I hope and pray to be able to do something similar, to allow me more freedom to travel and pursue photography. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing plans for hOMe when you have them!

Thank u for this article. It is what I needed to push me even further towards doing this. We should have more people encouraging us to have less things and live with passion. Iwould love to attend one of your build workshops in the future. Please forward schedule and dates.
    Thank you again,
    Bryan Sanders

    • Andrew March 28, 2014 at 10:00 am #

Hi Bryan. Thanks for your message. I’m glad that this article was helpful for you. I don’t have any tiny house workshops on the schedule at this time. I do have a bunch of straw bale construction workshops if that interests you. You can see that schedule at http://www.StrawBale.com.

      Stay inspired…

      • Lindsay September 28, 2014 at 10:08 am #

        Hi Andrew,

Back in my country Panama we make houses with straw and mud and you can look the videos in YouTube. I wanted to ask you if you use the same materials like we do when you built straw houses?

        • Andrew September 28, 2014 at 8:33 pm #

Hi Lindsay. First of all, I’m sorry to hear of your challenges. I know it may be difficult to see right now, but I have found in my life that all of the challenges I have had have been an amazing opportunity in the end. Something new and beautiful is bound to show up for you. I did not see anything specific to straw building in Panama; however, I can guess that it is probably a little different. I use full straw bale placed into the structure and then plastered/. Being that you are talking about traditional straw construction, I would assume that it was packed with the clay: similar to cob or adobe. I make this assumption based on the fact that baling machines are relatively new to the world and more traditional techniques would not have used them. Combining straw bale construction or traditional straw construction with the concept of a tiny house is a great way to go by the way. We have done several straw bale “tiny homes” over the years. I hold the vision of your future being full of joy.

  9. Haley April 30, 2014 at 10:11 am #

This is exactly what we have been looking for. We have looked at SO. MANY. tiny homes, and this is hands-down the best one. It really just makes sense-a nice kitchen, plenty of space…y’all are amazing and inspirational. We are working to sell our current home thats been like a weighted yoke around our neck and build this. This article also encompasses what we are wanting….to find our passion, actually live our life, and remember how to have fun. I saw a saying once that was something like….we buy clothes to wear to work, driving in car you are making payments on so you can get to the job you don’t want to pay for the clothes and car, while your house sits empty all day to you can afford to live in it”. That made me physically sick because thats the “new normal” and thats where we are at. My husband and I slammed on the brakes and started looking for a better way. Thanks for being a great starting point. By the way, I love your website. It’s clean and easy to navigate!

    • Andrew May 4, 2014 at 8:08 pm #

I love that you wrote that quote Haley! I just saw it on Facebook this morning while I’m traveling to teach a workshop in Missouri and forwarded it to Gabriella. It is such a telling description of how out of balance we have become as a society. Slowing down and finding reality again has been the best decision of our adult lives (other than getting married to each other and having our amazing kids!). So glad to hear that you have ht the brakes. Thanks for your kind feedback on hOMe and the website too.

  10. Will May 1, 2014 at 1:07 am #

    Hey Andrew,

I was wondering if you have any advice for someone about to go into university, hopefully in architecture. I was looking at your site and some of your blogs and a lot of what you have to say has really helped me kind of realize what it is that I might want to do with my life. What you said about the “American Dream” and its unfortunate marriage to consumerism and marketing has really struck a chord, and I was wondering if you had any advice about either escaping the rat race before it begins to define my life or at least minimizing the negative effects it has on me as I begin to pay off my upcoming student debt.

Also, on a side note, I was wondering if it’s possible to incorporate a subsistence farming situation in conjunction with your hOMe project and if you had any suggestions about site locations and building placements. I haven’t really explored the full website yet, so if this is explained somewhere else then don’t worry about it, I’ll find it, your website’s pretty intuitive on navigation.

Also (last also I promise), is it possible to use blackwater from the toilet in a similar way that the Earthship project has done it, or is that impractical with a mobile situation?

    • Andrew May 4, 2014 at 8:10 pm #

Hi Will. It’s so inspiring to hear from you as a young man already awake to the reality of our debt based society. Unfortunately, student debt is a hard thing to avoid these days and may be something you have to handle as you create your new life, post university. If you can avoid taking on debt to go to school, that’s a good plan; however, if you can’t that is okay too. Just be aware of the impact it will have on you as best you can from your current perspective.

The challenge as I see it is to avoid falling into the typical consumer cycle. It’s really easy to get buried with stuff you don’t need and can’t afford. Always keep your eyes on your TRUE life goals and allow the temporary pleasures to pass you by if they don’t support your greater vision. By all means, enjoy life fully, but not at the expense of your dreams and life vision.

If you can find the right piece of land to create a farm on, and that fits with your overall vision, then great! We decided not to grow our own food personally as we have friends who run a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and we buy a share in that instead. We have a TON of deer where we live and it would not make much sense to try and battle them over the food.

In terms of black water systems, most jurisdictions don’t recognize them as viable options yet. If you can find a way to get it permitted, then it’s a great way to go and the connection to the system can be made just as easily in the tiny home as in an earthship or any other home. Pre planning the connection is the key.

Best of success in your dreams!

I am curious as to why you didnt go a little higher for head space? Was it to do with regulations or choice.

Thanks Mary. Yes, our height was limited by height restrictions for road use.

Well, it seems the more I read, the more inspired I am. I began a personal journey around 4 years ago to REALLY change my life. I have downsized considerably since my divorce, moving from 3000 sq. ft. to living in two rooms. So, even before I discovered Tiny Homes, I began living in a way that is very compatible to the tiny lifestyle. I am going to build my home beginning later this year, and further have been inspired by folks like you guys, to try to find a way to build a tiny home community for people who are disadvantaged by some of the things that have limited me in my life. I have been blessed with rich experiences throughout my life, and I want to make the most use of these by helping others to achieve that sense of peace and wonder that comes with doing what you love. My goal over the next few years, while I am still working the ‘rat-race’ job is to find any way possible to buy land, build homes, and retire to a community that is committed, rich in diversity, welcomes differing viewpoints, and is dedicated to growth and sustainability. Thanks for all that you have done to launch this dream!

Hello Andrew, i am only 19, but i seen your house story shared on facebook. I am completely inspired by your achievements and wish to have a home just like yours within a couple of years, i want to save up to buy all my materials. I probably couldnt build the house on my own, but i would find a few professional friends to help me do so. 🙂 I can see the economic downturn and i have a part time job now and a car, and those bills add up. i want a mobile home like yours because my dream is to travel the world. You are an inspiration and i feel that seeing this has changed my entire look of my future into something brighter. Although i have a few questions about the power and water… im curious as to how that would be set up. But i hope to see you post more videos and blogs! I will certainly follow your examples!

Thanks Melaina! Glad to hear of your inspiration!!! We have solar power on our land and our hOMe is set up to plug into a standard 50 amp RV plug. The water is hooked up to our well system, but could be hooked up via a hose by simply changing the current fitting. Stay inspired and live your dreams!!!

  16. Ginger July 12, 2014 at 10:15 pm #

    Hi Andrew,
I want to thank you all for sharing so much information with us. For the past 7 years, I have lived in other people’s homes; sick mom, friend from church, and as a live-in caregiver of a disabled, elderly couple. Because of this, I have learned a great deal about myself in that I really don’t need a lot. Unfortunately, there are people who classify me as a failure because I don’t own a home, I don’t own a car, I don’t have a whole lot by the world’s standards. But I don’t see it that way. I am happy; I am content; I can be mobile in a matter of a few hours.

Finding my passion has taken a long time for me. I love, love, love helping people. Yes, it gets exhausting at times, but it fills me with a joy and sense of purpose that I didn’t know I could have until just a couple of years ago. There are two things I love doing more than anything else (apart from spending time with my kids and grandbabies). As already stated, I love helping people. But I also love building things or creating things with wood. So, I have decided that I am not going to pursue a j-o-b like most people. I am going to do what I love.

If the deal doesn’t go through to buy the RV that I just found, I will build a tiny house on wheels. I will start my own scroll saw art business which I can do in my son’s work shop at his house while I study to become either a doctor of naturopathy or holistic practitioner.

In the past couple of weeks, I have been researching the tiny house movement and am ever so grateful to come across your website. Seriously, I cannot thank you and your family enough for sharing so much wonderful information. To be honest with you, I am almost hoping the deal for the RV doesn’t go through just so I can build my own tiny house:-) You can bet I will be devouring every bit of info you have on this website.

Peace and blessings to you all.

    • Andrew July 20, 2014 at 9:28 am #

What a wonderful message Ginger. I want to jump to something that really spoke to me. You say that people consider you a failure because you don’t own X, Y, and Z. I found your next words really inspiring. The fact that you are happy and content and that you don’t “have a whole lot by the world’s standards” speaks volumes to how much of a “success” you are. It is clear that your heart is full and you share that with those around you. What else is there?

I have travelled quite a lot over the years and perhaps the most incredibly friendly, giving, and loving people I have met were those in remote villages of Senegal West Africa. They had very little, almost nothing, yet they were so incredibly happy. The closer I got to the cities and people who “had things” in Senegal, the more that happiness turned away. I find that to be true in my own life as well. I am happiest when I have less to keep track of and “worry about.”

It sounds weird, but I hope the RV deal fell through. 🙂 Stay inspired and inspire those around. It sounds like that’s what you do.

  17. Michael November 12, 2014 at 3:14 pm #

    Hi Andrew!

Having felt so much inner confliction within myself and not being able to pinpoint what it was, I am beginning to discover myself and see the world around me in a different light.

I’m 22 years old, a Helicopter Engineer for the Royal Navy in England. I decided a few months back to switch of the TV, separate myself from the media and consumer ideology. To meditate a few times a week and contemplate on what my inner passion is whilst listening to calming music.

Having read your article on your ‘What are you passionate about’ page it really hit me. Words cannot describe the effect that this social norm has on me and I suppose others.

I now feel so alone in a society so wrapped up in this consumer norm. But I now have my goals. I’m leaving the Navy to be with my family more, work to live not to survive. Your hOMe has really inspired me also.

Anyway I just felt as though I should reach out to you and thank you for such inspiring words, and to feel like there are others who think like me.

I wish the very best in the future for everyone, and hope they find peace and happiness whatever they do.

    • Andrew November 17, 2014 at 9:56 am #

Hi Mike. Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing your story with us. It is always powerful for me to hear of people taking the step to look inside and to discover who they really are. I hope you very quickly learn that you are not alone in a consumer society. In fact, you are more connected now than ever now that you know what is truly important for you and your family. I am a music student with a dream to do good in the world with my music both as a musician and composer. Realizing that I will not make much or money at first (or ever), I have been looking for ways to decrease my living expenses so that I can support myself on very little and eventually be able to music full-time without having a side job. The idea of a tiny house has been appealing to me since it holds the possibility of helping decreasing living expenses (in the long run).

I love it Nat. My initial feedback is to not limit yourself though. By saying you don’t plan to make much or any money doing what you love, you are setting that course. Instead, be open to making as much money as you want/need and accept that into your world. Wouldn’t it be great to do what you are passionate about, bring “good to the world”, AND make money to support yourself doing it?

Andrew, I’ve been following the “tiny home” movement for quite a number of years. It appeals to me now that I’ve (somewhat) downsized in retirement and am living in the Baja of Mexico, in a leisurely and quiet, but culturally aware, town. FYI, I turned off the TV two decades ago; the only thing I use it for is for viewing my DVD movie collection. Turn off the TV. That advice is good advice – the media loves to make us think we need more and better and newer. I now read “alternative” publications such as YES Magazine and The WEEK magazine, which help me stay in touch with world views beyond the US-consumerist culture. In the US, we become immersed in messages of what we should be, should have, and should do. No one can choose for you except you, yourself. Thank you for offering good advice to the people writing to you; everyone should find a dream or a goal and then head in the direction of achieving it. In such a way, we are creating a life instead reacting to whatever happens to land in our path. And by the way, your personal “tiny home” is the most lovely, spacious, and efficient one I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing with us how to live more simply, more in touch with our personal values.

Thanks so much Julie. Where in the Baja are you? We made Mulege home for 5 months and spend time in Loreto as well. We LOVE the Baja.
